Is My Period Pain Normal?

Period cramps are common, but pain that regularly stops you from doing everyday activities deserves medical attention. You do not have to simply put up with it.

When should I speak with a healthcare provider?

Book an appointment if:

• Pain makes you miss school, work, sleep or usual activities.

• Your periods become more painful, heavier or irregular.

• You have pain during sex, urination or bowel movements.

• You bleed between periods.

Does painful menstruation mean endometriosis?

Not always. Period pain can occur without an underlying condition, or be related to endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroids or other causes. An assessment can help work out what is happening.

What can I do while waiting?

Gentle heat may help; protect your skin from burns. Ask a pharmacist or healthcare provider about pain relief that is suitable for you.

When is it urgent?

Get urgent medical advice for severe or worsening pain, especially when usual pain relief is not helping. Go to an emergency department for severe pelvic pain, fainting, breathing difficulty or heavy bleeding with pelvic pain. Pelvic pain with possible pregnancy or fever needs urgent assessment.
