What Are the First Signs of Endometriosis?

Painful periods that disrupt daily life can be an early sign of endometriosis. There is no single first symptom: people experience it differently, and some have no symptoms.

Symptoms worth discussing

• Period pain that interferes with school, work or usual activities.

• Pelvic pain that also happens between periods.

• Pain during or after sex.

• Pain with bowel movements or urination, particularly around your period.

• Bloating, nausea, fatigue or heavy bleeding.

These symptoms can have other causes. A symptom list cannot confirm endometriosis.

Can symptoms start in teenagers?

Yes. Endometriosis can affect people from their first periods onward. Being young does not rule it out.

When should I book an appointment?

Speak with a healthcare provider when symptoms recur, worsen, or affect your everyday life. You do not need to wait until the pain becomes unbearable.

What should I bring?

Write down when symptoms occur, what helps, and any missed activities. Note your bleeding pattern and medications. Mention any family history of endometriosis.
