Your Endometriosis Referral Was Declined: What Can You Do Next?

A declined referral can be discouraging. Your symptoms still deserve attention. Ask the healthcare provider who sent it to help you understand the response and decide what to do next.

1. Find out what happened

Ask for a copy of the clinic’s reply. Was the referral declined, sent back because information was missing, or accepted onto a waiting list?

Clinics may have age limits, serve certain regions or need an assessment from another provider first. Some may not offer the care you need. Ask for the specific reason.

“Could you explain the clinic’s response and help me understand my next option?”

2. Check whether information was missing

Ask your healthcare provider to check that the referral explains:

  • Your symptoms and how they affect daily life.

  • Treatments you have tried, including side effects or reasons they were unsuitable.

  • Relevant test results and previous surgery reports.

A short example can help: “Pain wakes me at night” or “I missed three school days this month.”

If information was missing, ask whether the clinic will review the referral again. Confirm who will send the information and when.

3. Discuss another option

  • Could another gynecologist or endometriosis clinic help?

  • Would a second opinion be useful?

  • For a teen, is there a clinic experienced in caring for younger patients?

Referral requirements differ between clinics. For example, BC Women’s Hospital publishes its own requirements for its pelvic pain and endometriosis program. They do not apply to every clinic in Canada.

If care involves travel or private fees, check costs and health coverage before booking. A new referral does not guarantee an appointment or a shorter wait.

4. Make a plan for symptoms now

Ask what can help while the referral is being sorted out. Discuss symptom relief, support for school or work, and when to book another appointment.

Ask who to contact if symptoms change. Your healthcare provider can reassess you and decide whether the referral needs updated information.

If symptoms become sudden or severe, seek urgent medical care. Do not wait for a referral appointment.

5. Write down the next step

  • Who will send more information or arrange another referral?

  • When should I check back?

  • Who will help with my symptoms until I am seen?

Keep the clinic’s reply and a brief record of calls. This makes it easier to follow up without having to remember everything.

For teens and parents

Teens: ask for an explanation in words you understand. You can bring someone you trust.

Parents: help track calls and paperwork. Ask your teen what support they want, and let them explain how symptoms affect their life.

Your next step

Contact the office that sent the referral. Ask to review the reply and leave with one clear action and a follow-up date.
